If you like latakia then consider this recommended, at least to try, it's an experience. I can smoke several bowls in a row and enjoy its very full flavour. The smokiness is cool and mellow, very nice, but I failed to really see how this was a team effort. Having recently transitioned from cigar smoking to the hobby of pipe smoking (five months ago), I am still testing the waters of the masses of pipes and tobaccos available. It's got full-on flavor and is comprised of quality leaf. Second mistake: Burley has no proper taste; its a neutral tobacco without a specific taste. Might not have the best flavour in the world by itself, but it is a very cool burning leaf. Been a pipe smoker for over 40 years and Pirate Kake is some of the best ever. Mid-Bowl: The other leaves add their support and give this blend nice body. I'll order the third tin soon. So, if you're a latakia lover give this blend a shot. There is little balance of flavors in that this blend is a showcase of Latakia with the other components only serving to keep it from being too monochromatic. 3 Stars, at the least. Needless to say, the Latakia dominates from beginning to end, but it is not entirely one-dimensional. A cool, even burning, thick smoke with an even better smokey aroma that I just love to go back too. There is tons of thick white smoke, and it really is a lot of fun to light up. I have some difficult lighting and smoking (a feeling of weakining burning) more than other Latakia blends. It rubs out perfect and packs well. It does have a slight spiciness to it, but it's missing the punchiness of Ten Russians, the depth of Bill Baileys Balkan, and the spicy sweet subtleties of Plum Pudding. However, I didn't find the same results in smaller pipes or even my briars so I might have just had an off day. The overall effect is very good, similar to and in my opinion better than Mississippi River. Highly recommended for lovers of Latakia: over 75% and yet not over powering. It's not so much of that "campfire" Latakia taste as it is that mossy, damp, woody, nature-like taste. If you love Latakia, this is a must try. This is a good blend if you really want to know what "Latakia Forward" means. I taste at least three different alternate flavor notes as different sized chunks of tobacco burn. I opened the backy and let it dry a tad bit,and then loaded a bowl. As others have mentioned, Pirate Kake would probably blend very well with FVF, or other sweet, full bodied, predominately English or Virginia blends. And, I almost prefer this one, DaVinci's flavor profile is more complex compared to Pirate Kake. Wow, holding in the hands a brick of this extremely dark brown-black blend (no light-colored bits in it!) A drawback for me is the frequent relights, even with a dried tobacco. After about 4 months I tried it again, Wow!!!! It is like smoking straight Latakia, really unsmokable! The cons: It comes in a little brick - it look very suspicious. And this stuff will haunt your pipes for eternity. Yes, there are others - not better, simply different. The wife will hate it but I'm too old to care.
